Cannon Beach vs Seaside vs Astoria: Which One Is Actually Worth It?

If you’re planning an Full Oregon Coast trip on U.S. Route 101, one of the biggest questions is:

Which town should you stop in — Cannon Beach, Seaside, or Astoria?

I’ve driven Highway 101 four different times and stopped in all three of these towns. Even though they’re very close to each other, they all feel completely different.

In this guide, I’ll break down:

  • What each town is best for
  • The vibe of each place
  • Where I would personally stay
  • And which one I would choose if I only had time for one

🌊 Cannon Beach

I would stop in Cannon Beach every single time.
If you’re visiting the Oregon Coast for the first time and can only pick one place — this is it.

  • Wide, beautiful beach
  • Easy to walk around
  • One of the best photo spots on the entire coast

You can walk along N Hemlock Street, which has:

  • Souvenir shops
  • Cafes
  • Small local stores

It also has a lot of hotel options, but honestly:
I found Cannon Beach expensive, which is why I stayed in Seaside instead.

👉 My take:
If you only have time for one stop, Cannon Beach wins. No question.

🎡 Seaside

I’ve stayed in Seaside twice, mainly because of the prices.
This town feels more like a classic tourist beach town.

Most of the action is around Broadway Street, where you’ll find:

  • Arcades
  • Restaurants
  • Shops
  • Cinema

👉 The biggest advantage here:

  • Hotels and motels are cheaper than Cannon Beach
  • It’s only about 15 minutes away from Cannon Beach

That’s exactly why I stayed here instead of Cannon Beach.

However:

  • It feels more crowded and touristy
  • Fewer “nice” souvenir-style shops compared to Cannon Beach

👉 My take:
Stay here to save money, then drive to Cannon Beach.

🌉 Astoria

Astoria is the most different out of the three.
This is more of a historic town rather than a beach destination.

  • Located along the Columbia River
  • No real beach like Cannon Beach or Seaside
  • More local, less touristy vibe

👉 What I liked:

  • I actually liked the shops here more than Cannon Beach
  • It feels less crowded and more unique

👉 What’s missing:

  • No beach experience
  • Not that “Oregon Coast beach” feel

👉 My take:
If you want a cool town + views + fewer crowds, Astoria is a great stop.
But if you want a beach, Cannon Beach is better.

📍 Final Thoughts

Even though these towns are very close to each other, they offer completely different experiences.

  • Cannon Beach is the must-see
  • Seaside is the practical choice
  • Astoria is the underrated one

If you have time, I’d honestly recommend doing all three in one trip since they’re so close.
