Must-Have RV Items for Traveling with Pets

We travel full-time in our RV with our pets — our cat Paloma and our dog Porter — and over time we’ve learned what truly makes RV life easier for them (and for us).

RV travel with pets is very different from living in a house. Space is limited, temperatures can change quickly, and you’re constantly moving from one campsite to the next. What works at home doesn’t always work on the road. The right RV pet essentials can make a huge difference in keeping your cat or dog comfortable, safe, and stress-free — whether you’re driving, hiking, or relaxing at camp.

This isn’t a “buy everything” list.

These are the must-have RV items for traveling with pets that we personally use, tested on real weekend trips and full-time road travel. I’ll also mention a few items we don’t use but could be helpful depending on your RV setup and your pet’s personality.

If you’re planning RV travel with dogs or cats — or thinking about full-time RV life with pets — this guide will help you figure out what’s actually worth bringing (and what isn’t).

🐱🐶 Items We Personally Use & Recommend

These are the items we highly recommend for you to get and it will be helpful to you.

🛰️ Breakaway GPS-Ready Cat Collar

We don’t let Paloma wander far from the RV and usually keep an eye on her. But things can happen quickly at campsites.
Having a GPS-ready collar gives us peace of mind. If she ever runs off, we’d know exactly where she is.
Even if you trust your cat, RV life means new environments all the time — and that makes GPS tracking extra valuable.

💧 Wireless Water Fountain

After long driving days, it’s easy to focus on food and forget hydration.
The wireless water fountain has been a huge help. Since it runs on battery, we don’t need to plug it in constantly — which is perfect for conserving RV electricity.
It also encourages them to drink more, especially in warm weather.

❄️ No-Power Cooling Mat

This is one of our favorite summer RV items.
When we leave for a hike or step out for a few hours, the cooling mat helps keep them comfortable without using electricity.
It’s especially helpful during hot days when you don’t want to rely only on RV AC.

🥣 Collapsible Travel Pet Bowl

In an RV, space matters.
A collapsible bowl is small, lightweight, and easy to store. We always keep one accessible for quick stops or outdoor meals.

🌙 Reflective Outdoor Harness & Clips

At campsites, especially at night, visibility is everything.
Porter uses a reflective harness and leash setup, which makes him much easier to see in low light. It’s simple, but it’s made a big difference during evening walks.

📹 Portable Pet Camera with Treat Dispenser

This is more for peace of mind.
You can check in on your pets while hiking and even give them treats remotely. It helps reduce anxiety — for both them and you.

🌡️ RV Pet Temperature & Environment Monitor

This one is huge.
If you leave your pets in the RV for longer hikes, you need to know if the temperature changes.
An RV-specific temperature monitor alerts you if it gets too hot or too cold inside — which can be life-saving.

🧼 Obvious but Essential Items

These aren’t fancy — but they matter.

🐾 Cat Litter Mat

RV carpets and litter do not mix.
A good litter mat makes cleanup much easier and keeps the RV livable.

🦮 High-Visibility Leash & Harness Combo

Porter has tried to run off before — thankfully nothing happened.
Reflective gear makes a massive difference at dusk or early morning.
In campground environments, this is essential.

🧳 Items We Don’t Personally Use (But You Might Need)

These aren’t necessary for us — but depending on your pet, they could be helpful.

🚪 Window Screen Door Pet Protector

If your pets scratch screens, this can save you from expensive repairs.
We’ve been lucky so far — ours don’t scratch.

🪜 Folding Pet Ramp

Great for older dogs or small pets who struggle jumping into the RV.
Especially helpful for arthritis or low-clearance rigs.

🐶 Folding Portable Playpen

Paloma hates it and it’s too small for Porter — so we don’t use one.
But if you need a controlled outdoor space at campsites, this could work for you.
