Even though the distance may not seem extremely long, the reason it takes longer is because the coastal roads are slower and there are many places worth stopping.

The Pacific Coast is full of beautiful viewpoints, beaches, and small towns, so it’s impossible to stop everywhere. Instead, I’ve listed a few must-visit locations that most travelers shouldn’t miss.

Redwood National and State Parks
The redwood forests in Northern California are easily one of the most unforgettable parts of the entire Highway 101 road trip.
These parks protect some of the tallest trees on Earth, and walking through the forest surrounded by massive redwoods feels completely different from anywhere else along the coast.
Even a short hike here can be incredible, but some of the best trails include:

If you only stop at one place on this road trip, make it the redwoods.
Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
The Oregon Dunes create one of the most unique landscapes along the Pacific Coast.
Massive sand dunes stretch for miles along the coastline and can reach up to 500 feet high. The scenery here feels completely different from the cliffs and forests found along the rest of the Oregon Coast.
If you visit during the right season, you can also explore the dunes using ATVs or dune buggies.
If you prefer something quieter, you can simply walk into the dunes and enjoy the views of the ocean and sand hills.
Even a short walk of about a mile can bring you into the middle of this incredible landscape.
Cannon beach
Cannon Beach is one of the most famous stops on the Oregon Coast, and it’s easy to see why.
The beach is home to Haystack Rock, a massive sea stack rising out of the ocean just offshore. It’s one of the most photographed coastal landmarks in Oregon.
Cannon Beach is also a great place to take a break from driving. The town has:

• coffee shops
• restaurants
• art galleries
Nearby towns like Astoria and Florence are also nice stops along the route, but Cannon Beach offers one of the best overall coastal experiences.
Best Hikes on the Route
Here are some of the hikes along the route that are worth considering.
Karl Knapp Trail
Location: Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
Distance: 3.2 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 300 ft
This is one of my favorite hikes in the redwoods. The trail winds through dense forest and feels incredibly peaceful.
Big Tree Wayside
Location: Prairie Creek Redwoods
Distance: 0.3 miles
Elevation Gain: minimal
A short walk that leads to one of the largest trees in the area. It’s easy to combine this with the Karl Knapp Trail.
Boy Scout Tree Trail
Location: Jedediah Smith Redwoods
Distance: 5.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 800 ft
This hike leads through some of the most beautiful redwood forests in Northern California.
Grove of Titans Trail
Location: Jedediah Smith Redwoods
Distance: 1.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 200 ft
A relatively easy hike that takes you into a grove of massive old-growth redwoods.
Hobbit Beach Trail
Distance: 0.7 miles
Elevation Gain: 150 ft
A short hike through forest that opens onto a beautiful hidden beach.
Neahkahnie Mountain Trail
Distance: 2.8 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 900 ft
One of the best viewpoints along the Oregon coast.

How long does it take to drive from Seattle to San Francisco on Highway 101?

Is it better to drive Highway 101 or Interstate 5?
If your goal is simply to reach San Francisco quickly, taking Interstate 5 is faster.
But if you want one of the most scenic road trips in the United States, Highway 101 is absolutely the better choice.

Another highlight is driving through the giant redwoods near Redwood National and State Parks and along the famous Avenue of the Giants.

How many days do you need for this road trip?
The ideal amount of time depends on how much you want to explore.

Absolutely.
The Oregon coast is one of the most beautiful parts of the entire route. You’ll find dramatic cliffs, long sandy beaches, and scenic viewpoints around almost every corner.
Stops like Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and Heceta Head Lighthouse are some of the most photographed locations along the coast.
When is the best time to do Road 101 trip?
The best time to travel is usually late spring through early fall.
Summer offers the most reliable weather, but it can also be the busiest season.
Spring and fall are often ideal because the crowds are smaller while the scenery is still beautiful.
Winter can also be dramatic with powerful coastal storms, but expect cooler temperatures and occasional rain.
Do you need a 4WD vehicle for this road trip?
No special vehicle is required for this route.
Most of the drive follows paved highways and coastal roads. A regular car is perfectly fine for the majority of the trip.
