Mount Si Trail Guide (Challenging Hike Near Seattle)
Mount Si Trail Overview
Mount Si Trail is one of the most popular hikes near Seattle, but honestly, this was one of the hikes I personally did not fully fall in love with. That being said, I also think I did not get the best conditions when I went. When I reached the top, it was super foggy, and I could not really see the full view. I still saw some of it, but definitely not the classic Mount Si views people usually talk about.
So I cannot fully say the hike is not worth it.
I think if you live around Seattle, already hiked a lot of places, and want more of a physical challenge, then Mount Si is definitely a solid option. But if you are visiting Washington for a short trip and trying to pick only a few hikes, I personally do not think this would be my first recommendation compared to some other Washington hikes.
One thing I actually liked is that even around the end of March there was basically no snow on the trail. So if you want a spring hike near Seattle without dealing with heavy snow conditions, this can honestly be a really good choice.
Most of the trail is inside the forest. You get small viewpoints here and there, but the big reward mostly comes near the top. The hike itself is more about the challenge, workout, and reaching the summit rather than nonstop scenic views the entire way.

Why I built this guide
I live in the Pacific Northwest and spend a lot of time exploring the areas around Seattle, especially places that can be reached in a few hours or less. I’m drawn to trips that don’t require long drives or packed itineraries — just good scenery, time outdoors, and space to slow down.
The places on this page aren’t recommendations pulled from a list. They’re destinations I’ve personally visited, camped at, hiked through, or spent real time exploring. I built this guide to share the kinds of weekend getaways I actually return to — places that feel like a reset, not a checklist.
If you’re looking for realistic trips, honest experiences, and ideas that work for both quick escapes and slower weekends, you’re in the right place.

❤️ Why We Loved Mount si Hike
Even though this was not my personal favorite hike around Seattle, I still understand why people love Mount Si so much.
The trail gives you a serious workout without needing technical climbing skills. It feels like one of those classic “test yourself” hikes around Washington. You will definitely feel the elevation gain on this one.
Another thing I liked was how accessible it is from Seattle. You can reach the trailhead pretty quickly compared to many other mountain hikes in Washington.
If you enjoy fitness-style hikes where the goal is pushing yourself physically, this trail honestly makes a lot more sense.

🅿️ Parking Information
The Mount Si parking lot is much bigger than many Washington trailheads, but it still fills up fast during weekends and sunny days.
Important things to know:
- Arrive early if hiking on weekends
- Discover Pass required
- Bathrooms available near parking area
- Trailhead is easy to access compared to many mountain hikes
- Regular cars are completely fine here
Compared to a lot of Washington hikes, the road conditions here are actually pretty easy.
🌲 Trail Conditions
The trail is very well maintained and easy to follow, but do not underestimate the elevation gain.
Here is what you can expect:
- Long uphill sections
- Switchbacks through dense forest
- Mostly shaded trail
- Rocky sections near the top
- Some muddy areas during rainy months
- Limited open views until the summit area
- Heavy foot traffic on weekends
This is not really a casual walk type of hike. Even though the trail is maintained well, the constant climbing can definitely tire people out quickly.
🎒 What to Bring
Since Mount Si is more physically demanding, bringing the right gear matters a lot more here.
Recommended Items
- Hiking shoes with good grip
- Plenty of water
- Snacks or lunch
- Lightweight rain jacket
- Hiking poles
- Layers for changing weather
- Portable charger
- Small first aid kit
During colder months:
- Gloves
- Warm layers
- Microspikes if icy near the summit
🚫 What NOT to Do
- Do not underestimate the elevation gain
- Do not start too late in the day
- Do not expect nonstop views the whole hike
- Do not forget your Discover Pass
- Do not wear flat casual sneakers
- Do not block the trail during busy weekends
- Do not rely completely on summit weather forecasts
Fog can completely change the summit experience like it did for us.
✨ Is Mount Si Worth It?
Honestly, I think it depends on what type of hiker you are.
If you want:
- a physical challenge,
- a workout hike,
- or a popular Seattle-area summit,
then yes, Mount Si is definitely worth doing at least once.
But if you are visiting Washington for a short trip and mainly looking for the most scenic hikes possible, I personally think there are better options nearby with more rewarding views throughout the hike.
Still, I can totally understand why Mount Si is such a classic Washington trail. The accessibility, challenge, and summit reward make it very popular for locals.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mount Si hard?
Yes. Mount Si is considered a hard hike mainly because of the steep elevation gain.
How long does Mount Si take?
Most hikers finish in around 4 to 6 hours depending on pace and breaks.

During winter or icy spring mornings, microspikes can definitely help near the upper sections.
Is Mount Si beginner friendly?
Not really for complete beginners. The trail is straightforward, but the elevation gain can be exhausting.
Are dogs allowed on Mount Si?
Yes, dogs are allowed on leash.
Is Mount Si crowded?
Very. This is one of the busiest hikes near Seattle, especially during weekends.
Is there snow on Mount Si in spring?
Usually less compared to alpine hikes nearby, which makes it a popular early-season option.
Can kids do Mount Si?
Some experienced and active kids can do it, but this is not an easy family hike.
Final Thoughts
Mount Si Trail is one of those hikes that feels more about the accomplishment than the actual trail itself.
You spend most of the hike climbing through forest, working your legs, and pushing uphill until you finally reach the summit area. For some hikers, that challenge is exactly why they love it.
Personally, I think weather plays a huge role here. Since our summit views were mostly covered in fog, I probably did not get the full Mount Si experience people talk about.
Still, if you want a challenging day hike near Seattle without needing snow gear or technical climbing, Mount Si is definitely one of the classic Washington hikes worth considering.
